Top 5 States Sending The Most New Residents To Arizona

By AZBigMedia, azbigmedia.com | January 30, 2025

Arizona is riding a fresh wave of migration, drawing in younger, educated residents who are chasing both career opportunities and a better quality of life.

In 2023, the Grand Canyon State welcomed 57,000 net newcomers, ranking 6th in the nation for net migration. Arizona also ranks 2nd behind South Carolina for attracting young newcomers, with a net gain of 22,000 Gen Zers.

These findings are part of our StorageCafe report*, which uncovers the US’s “Magnet States” – those that lead the nation in net migration (the number of people moving in minus those leaving). By analyzing US Census data on housing costs, migration patterns, and lifestyle perks, the report highlights why Arizona continues to attract so many new residents – even as domestic migration is slowing down.

Who’s moving to Arizona?

  • Gen Z is leading the way, with nearly 26% of Arizona’s new arrivals falling into the 18–26 age group—Millennials aren’t far behind, cementing Arizona’s appeal as a top choice for those looking to relocate.
  • The main source of migration to Arizona is California. While migration flows in both directions, California is sending more than twice as many residents to Arizona as it receives in return—52,000 Californians moved to Arizona, compared to 24,000 Arizona-to-California relocations.
  • Texas and Florida also contributed significantly to Arizona’s growth, with newcomers drawn by its strong job market and higher income potential, despite higher housing costs.
